Michel Bassompierre graduated in sculpture from the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen ; after working in the atelier of René LELEU, this «young artist, 68 years old», as he likes to define himself, has shown his work in all the important Parisian exhibitions winning some of the most prestigious awards in France.
His sculptures in bronze and Carrara marble are sought after by important international collectors, exhibitions and museums. With great humility, Michel BASSOMPIERRE demonstrates his extreme talent in his sketches and his studies in shape and form. His animals: bears, horses, gorillas, or elephants, all seem to be caressed by the light. The artist loves to play with shadow to give greater impact to the volume in his work. His idea of freedom is, above all, his control over anatomical and technical restriction, and in fact, after fifty years of “gestation” he has finally “given birth” to a mature and accomplished style. « Although I might have been born with a pencil in my hand, I was not a musician, nor was I good with accounts, I was not truly good at anything else really, I was born to be a sculptor… sculpture is the materialisation of a dream. The dream of giving life to something that exists in your mind ».
Michel BASSOMPIERRE’s works are on show in galleries in Geneva, Courchevel, Paris, Lyon, Dinard, La Baule, Arcachon, Megève and Pont-Aven.
For two of their three-monthly exhibitions, Michel BASSOMPIERRE was invited by the Musée François POMPON of Saulieu to show his bears in 2015 and his gorillas in 2016.
